Don't know the answer but I thought this was a great question. I've never really thought about the SLR/compact difference with this issue. I just googled around and found this recent post here on dpreview (a compact camera user illustrates "burn in" after a direct sunlight shot):

Other comments on the interweb do refer to risk to DSLR's on 'liveview', which makes sense in line with your comments. Of course there are loads of comments that it's generally bad for the camera and the eyes but we all know that.  A subtlety was a DSLR with a zoom is actually high risk for the eyes - you're looking at the Sun through a telescope at that point.

I've not thought about it much but I do always avoid having direct sun in my photographs...
