I want value, not salesmanship Is the Olympus OM-D E-M5 possibly the best value for my dollar ?

No it is not. And not because its not a good camera but because it is at this moment and time the only decent/best m4/3 camera that Olympus produces. Lets call it rev. 1 of the things that are to come.

There are still things to be sorted out on m4/3 and if you are looking at buying for the long term well you could land up cursing the lack of a feature that has been released in the next model. If this was a cheap PS I would say OK , but the OMS EM-5 is not and by the time it becomes a "sort of grown up camera " you are looking at $1600 and counting.

Its a great little camera and takes wonderful pictures and is very small and you can put your lenses in your pockets and not break you back , etc. But it does not fulfill all the functions of a fully fledged DSLR.

With all due respect to people who say its OK to take bird pictures with. Well the bird must either be nailed to the perch or comatose. And I am not even talking about flying birds.Even garden birds move. You would have to use SAF to try and get these pictures. Or do zone focusing and let rip. But then you land up with small pictures. What most people forget with long lenses is the lack of DOF on the long up close end so zone focusing does on work that  well.
