OMD Eye focus - does it actually focus on the eye?

I used face recognition with closest eye focus selected.  Using the 75 1.8 shooting wide open, it is very obvious that it often does not actually focus on the eye.  It will focus on the ear, or nose, or some other facial part.  This flaw has caused me to take many shots just to make sure I get one that is actually on the eye.

Anyone else find this?  Is it because the focusing point on the screen is actually fixed so that it is choosing a focusing point CLOSEST to the eye even if it is not actually on the eye?

I'd love to figure out how to cure this.
