Those are very nice, but far from proving that they are better than portraits from the SEL5018.

I didn't say that they are better than portraits from the SEL 50. In fact, the first one is from the SEL 50. The second one couldn't have been taken with the SEL 50. I was merely trying to show the difference in focal length has real implications when shooting in real life. 24 and 50 are very, very different lenses. For me, there is no way I could replace one with the other.

I only emphasized the differenced between the SEL50 and Zeiss 24 because this is what the discussion was about: the merits of the Zeiss 24. Sure, the difference in focal length is real, which is by I have the SEL 50, the Sigma 30 AND the Sigma 19. But I just wanted to challenge your opinions, which seemed to imply that the Zeiss 24 was incontrovertibly superior to any comparable e-mount lens. I know you didn't phrase it like that, but you have also chimed in on every thread that I have seen comparing the Zeiss and the Sigma.

In the end, I fully acknowledge and agree that the Zeiss 24 is a great lens. But I want to paint a more realistic picture (or should I say "photo") of the realities:

  • In good light, it is not noticeably better than the Sigma 30.
  • The upcoming 35mm F1.8 lens may be as good in low light, and will have OSS and will be less than half the price of the Zeiss. The focal length is different, but one step back will give you the same.
  • The SEL50F18 produces portraits on par with the Zeiss 24.
  • Many people sell off their other E-Mount lenses to buy the Zeiss, and in many cases this is a mistake, especially if they had quite useful zoom lenses like the 55-210.

In my opinion, lenses like the Zeiss are luxury purchases, where people can just afford to buy them without selling other items they own. My motivation in this series of posts was to give other people this viewpoint. Cheers.

The Zeiss is a great lens, and a lot have to do with its particular focal length, to achieve 35mm focal length there aren't many choices for a fast lens. I came to nex because the nex7 +24mm zeiss would still be cheaper than a nikon FF with 35mm lens or a DX body with the 24mm lens. I don't know how big is your house, but if you want to shoot kids running around, you either have to pan wildly with a 75mm equivalent or just snap and then crop with the 35mm equivalent. With indoor kids picture, it is more so with capturing the moment rather than have them sit and pose, the portrait setting mentioned by the OP should be interpreted this way.

May be you don't notice the significant difference, but i think many who put out for the zeiss never regretted it, it's like i can't tell you how much better something tastes, its all personal, and the general public seems to agree zeiss is a better taste dish, that's just a fact, money wise its a different question, but indoor video i'd say goodluck with the 55-210, i would also just stick with the zeiss, for two reasons, 1st, it is wide so i can just leave the camera recording without framing every so often, then it is the wide aperture to lower the iso. set it up closer to the stage if you need to fill the frame, a steady video is much more enjoyable than shaky zoom in and outs. If you wanted zooming in and panning and all just take a 300 dollar came corder, would probably beat all dslr for that purpose.

the zeiss is worth it, if your shooting style demands it.
