The X series is a niche camera, it will not replace your dSLR nor will it replace your best P&S. To me it's more about enjoying photography than anything else. It's the camera that will be able to blend in to the environment and capture natural emotion. Take you back to a time when everybody and their mother wasn't a "photographer"
I'm actually surprised that the demographic for the X Series care about AF at all. While I can't justify an M9, I still love my M6. I for one can't wait till my adapters show up so I can start using my MF lenses again.
For me the X-E1 gave me the ability to lighten the load from my D800 and f/2.8 glass with unbelievable image quality and sharp contrasty lenses that are on par with the bigger pro level stuff I also shoot. I was and continue to be floored (not to be mistaken with flawed) over the image quality I am getting out of this little rig. Just blown away with the color, depth, and sharpness of the images.
Same, My primary rig is a 5D2 with tons of fast primes and zooms, but they have their place and will continue to do so. I used to love street photography, and a dSLR with a big L imposes on the subject and changes the scene. The Pen E-P2 with the EVF turned back the clock for me in terms of street photography. Great camera, but shadow noise killed it for me in the end. I am floored as well with the quality of the X Sensor, and while I still like to shoot RAW, I'm more than happy with the JPG quality and rendering.
I gave up the X-Pro1 because I shoot mostly MF and switching to the EVF for focus was laggy and I missed tons of shots.. Loved the camera though and really wish Fuji would of spent time on the OVF focus system as opposed to the hybrid. A true Rangefinder focus system would of knocked the XP1 out of the park for me.. Otherwise, the OVF is ok but nothing to right home about. That said I need a viewfinder, I can't stand shooting with an LCD
For me, this is a landscape, street, vacation, candid, portrait camera and will do the job perfectly well for what I am pointing it at. It is a camera system that I can use for 90+% of what I shoot. For that reason, I was willing to sacrifice a little in AF speed, as I am not shooting sports, or birds in flight (unless they get in my way).
While the AF is slower, I think it's way over exaggerated by the gear heads that need to measure every statistic from every angle, in every light condition and at every aperture setting while measuring the exact effectiveness of the distance meter and disputing the ISO scale that Fuji has employed.
While the viewfinder is a bit quirky and slightly laggy, it is super hi-res, bright and razor sharp, which gives me a good accurate representation of what I'm going to get out of the capture and allows me to chimp the images just as I would see them on my Macbook Pro Retina. I am not running from an extremely dark room to a overly lit bright room in order to see how quickly the VF refreshes and re-calibrates itself, and I am not whipping around and firing off rapid shots with wildly varying light sources where this would be a problem either.
The VF is significantly better than it was on the XP1 in my opinion and zoom for MF works great. It has it's quirks but I rely on the meter more than the screen to see exposure. It works for me.
While there are some issues with RAW conversion today, the JPEGS that come out of the camera are just ridiculously good and the camera really nails exposure and WB, so I see little need to extensively work the RAW files at this point, but when I do, I use Silkpix and it's working out fine for now. Do I want to continue to use LR? Of course, but I'm sure Fuji will resolve this issue and we will no longer have to look at the water color effects of JPEGS that are blown up 400%, in case we need to print those billboards.
That's exactly it.. I love DPReview and don't get me wrong the problem isn't limited to this forum but the armchair critics who nitpick every detail are collectors not photographers.
What I do have is the most incredible small camera system that I have seen to date, and while many are measuring/documenting/bemoaning every flaw and statistic, I am enjoying it immensely as a creative tool. I take it out more than my DSLR, because it's small/light enough and gives me great joy in shooting with it. Most importantly, it delivers image quality on par with my high end DSLR rig!
Don't get me wrong, I want to see the issues addressed as well, but I am also enjoying the journey!
