Yes, it does really matter as printers do vary even within the same model.
It wasn't my experience, though. Caned profiles for Epson, Hannemuhle and Ilford papers were as good as those that I created with CM. The profiles are made by experienced people on high end spectrophotometers and 3880 comes factory calibrated, so they were - at least in my case - spot on. I would still recommend getting the CM spectrophotometer for cheaper and special papers.
Thanks. I went ahead and ordered the CM Photo. There's always the chance that my 3880 will "drift" at some point, and I'll be able to update my paper profiles.
