I used some very thin yet strong elastic cord, tied tightly around the remote with a loop. It lives on my strap and works perfectly for remote tripod shots, either with or without mirror up delay. Simple to remove and the loop makes it easier to keep track of (stick a finger through). I've used this scheme for about 4 years - works perfectly. Oh, and the cost is not prohibitive - about $0.05 for materials . . .
