If you've been on this forum for a while like I have, this is a topic that really has some legs, it just keeps coming up, over and over. It's also one of those topics that beings with it some very stop opinions.
Here's my experience, I started off with my DSLR experience with a D100, then a D2x, a D200, a D3, D3x, D7000 and now a D800. I work professionally and do a lot of work in the field, ranging from street photography in Italy, landscape to Post Katrina New Orleans and the past 22 Mardi Gras there.
In my experience, I have never once scratched an LCD screen, I will not say its impossible, but I do not exactly warp my gear in a turkish towel and baby it. I do not think its an issue. the plastic lcd protectors often do get scratched and get hazy with time and are more difficult to read in the sun. Its interesting that Nikon will from time to time make a camera like the D3 that is not supplied with one.
My final test case is my Lumix GF-1, its my pocket camera, it lives in my jacket (often sharing the space with car keys) and really takes a beating, and the loss of paint shows it, again, even this camera has no evidence of scratching. Perhaps I am just lucky.
Now that we've settled that, can we move on to the question of should we all be using UV filters on our lenses..........
