Modern camera bodies are made of very thin magnesium, the threaded tripod bush is usually just a press fit into this. I've seen a number of cameras with the bush ripped out of the body because the magnesium is very brittle and does not tolerate shearing forces. An inexpensive Q/R plate prevents such damage.
