It's always a matter of taking the good with the bad when you read Hogan. He delivers some good info, and then he takes his obligatory shot at Nikon.

Two questions for you:

  1. Can you offer evidence as to how/why these "shots" were/are not based on fact or reasonable observation?
  2. Do you honestly think Hogan takes these "shots" to diminish Nikon in the market place, or to improve them as a company which is more responsive and in touch with its customers (among other things)?

One important data point: Hogan's equipment list is primarily filled with things that have "Nikon" in the label. Is that evidence for a pure pot-shooter?

It's almost as if he applied for a job with them and was rejected.

Well, that isn't taking a shot (obligatory or otherwise), and boy, if it isn't substantiated by fantom facts and data, I don't know what is.

I suppose a number of people have emailed him to complain (I'm not one of them), so he felt a need once again to slip into that "impartial journalist" mode to write a defense. This seems to happen quite often of late.

"...to write a defense." You mean for Nikon? How would that be a pot shot?

Let me turn this around for you. My Nikon cameras over the years have been pretty much trouble-free, and they have been excellent. The same goes for Nikon lenses. So whose survey should I believe, Thom's or mine. I will go with mine every time. Why would I want Nikon to change anything? When I have had problems, which has happened a few times, Nikon has fixed the problem. Whose survey should I believe on that one? Again, I will take my own. Does anyone need moral support or commiseration from Thom? That would be embarrassing.

Why in the world would the people happy with their Nikon gear be supportive of all this negative stuff Thom is spinning? Should we be thinking, "Oh wait, I was happy with my stuff, but Thom says I shouldn't be, and he has all these facts and anecdotes to prove it." I don't think so. If there are enough adults with Nikon problems, Nikon will do something different. Otherwise, they won't. And I doubt they are using Hogan's surveys and statistics for a go-by. I think those are a bit tainted. I'm not sure I trust the participants.

I am supportive of Nikon as long as they keep me satisfied, and my satisfaction is measured on a user-experience base of ONE. Me. I don't want them to do anything different. If the time comes I am unhappy with them, I won't need Thom, DPR members or anybody to give me a plan of action. I will make that up for myself.

Oh, in "defense" of himself.
