Andy, your 18-55 lens is just fine to get you started. For the money, the 50mm 1.8 and the 35mm 1.8 lenses will give you very good results and that "out-of-focus" area you desire. The 24MP sensor of the D3200 does demand attention to technique, however. Just start making images, and you'll soon discover the beautiful capabilities of the D3200.
