There's no other way than blocking the visible RC control flash with some home-made filter or flash head cover that only allows IR through. Better is to use the FL-LM2 for RC control as it's lighter to carry if shooting hand held and the flash head is smaller and easier to cover.
The fact is that the final RC flash pulse to trigger the final exposure flash naturally has to happen within the actual exposure time.
Otherwise to eliminate RC control flash contribution you need to investigate true radio flash slave solutions, but then you have only auto or manual and no TTL.
Large apertures, close distance and higher ISO settings all go to make the RC problem worse.

As mentioned in my original post, I use a card to keep the light from going straight forward, but I find it annoying to have to rig up some kind of contraption to do this. Strictly speaking it doesn't solve the problem as you still get some spill around the room. Practically it works fine, as long as the other light is much brighter, if you can figure out a way to mount the card. My question is really if there is something I'm missing, or if a mechanical solution such as this is the only way around it...
You are quite right, Guy. I obviously never noticed when I shot Canon. If anything, Olympus is only guilty of being honest in their manual and actually stating that it will contribute a small amount of flash
Here is one of many threads I've now found after looking for similar threads on Canon and Nikon:
