I have just measured the depth of tripod socket in a few cameras.

7 in all. Depths go from 5.74mm (olympus) to 6.83mm (Ricoh)

And my tripod screw lengths run from 4.48mm (Joby ball head QR) to 5.81mm (ultrapod 2)

As you can see. the use of one of these cameras  with one of my tripods may cause damage.

And will cause damage if over tightened.

Add hard debris to the equation, either on the end of the screw or hiding in the socket. Plus the very low clearance given its hard to believe this does not happen more often.

I would still say though (seeing the photograph only) Crossed or jammed  thread caused the bulge.

Have a good look at the bulge. If its equal (ish) all the way round its been over tightened. Or bottomed out.

If the bulge is (or looks) twisted or uneven. It's most likely the result of being crossed.

And in the photo the small screws either side of the socket look twisted a little in the clockwise direction.

Check the length of your tripod screw and is the bedding cork or rubber seat past its sell by date !

This is repairable by a good engineer/model engineer. without silly camera shop prices.
