4/3Rumors - the prefocus mechanism we already have
In reply to amalric, 6 months ago

Don't read too much into anything 43Rumors posts as news. It's mostly speculation based on inconclusive ramblings.

This weekend while on the Central California Coast shooting birds with the E-5, 50-200 and EC-14 I discovered a wonderful prefocus mechanism that's already built into every Olympus lens. There's a ring at the front of every lens that prefocuses quite accurately.

I used the focus another way though. Putting the camera into manual focus and setting the mode to autofocus using the AEL/AFL button allowed me to get AF close and then fine tune the focus on the bird's eye using the focus ring. It also worked well for following BIF once I got focus close. Otherwise I found the lens would occasionally hunt for focus if/when I missed setting the target exactly on the bird.

Birding is something I'm new to and don't get many opportunities for here in So Cal. So this past weekend I was perfecting my techniques. I wouldn't think of using any m4/3 with this lens set-up. CDAF is too slow. Micro 4/3 bodies are too small and the single button control access just isn't there.
