That's good to know. That is how I would normaly use it also, though I usually don't leave it on my tripod for extended hikes. However, I could put it there for quite a while while I explore a landscape.

Sorry to say, but this looks like a user induced problem to me. I've been using my OM-D with a gorillapod with quick release plate without any issues and I've also been using it on a screw-in type monopod, carrying the camera over my shoulder for longer hikes etc and my socket doesn't show even the slightest sign of wear.
