D600's significant price drop and Nikon's FF policy...

D600 has a significant price drop within 2 months of introduction, obviously the camera "doesn't make the targeted numbers" (although it sells well) and it was originally well overpriced for a reason.

All the above means that the camera was overpriced in the first place... or else such a discount couldn't have been applied... Otherwise a similar policy would be applied for the rest of the products... which it doesn't! All other offers are "normal"... with D600 we are talking about a more than 25% (!!!) discount within 2 months of introduction... and it will drop further!

IMO, the reason that Nikon overpriced the product so much, was to "protect" D800 from being cannibalized, but this lead to lower volumes than they predicted so that they have to "correct" the false policy... Now, the result will be that D800 (plain - not the E) will be cannibalized and D600 target sales will be achieved... This means that a "corrective action" shall be applied with D800 too... Now, since D800 is not overpriced, this means that such a discount for it should be out of the question... Which leaves one alternative only... to enhance camera's appeal! ...I can imagine only one costless way of doing that, ...a D800S (or H or whatever) bearing D4's sensor, that would provide a faster alternative with better workflow and still superb IQ...

But wouldn't such a D800 cannibalize D4 in return? ...you may ask! It surely would, but this could be an overcome by having D800's (plain) sensor in a ...D4 body, which would provide a faster alternative to D800 users, replace D3X and provide a fast enough, "war resistant", great quality camera to those that need a higher resolution alternative to D4's extreme speed... That is until D4S will arrive. which would then distinguish D4S sensor from the "plain" one, ...much like the way that D3S solved the problem of D700 cannibalizing D3.
