Software for photo editing

This is helpful. Not to derail the OP's question, but I have Photoshop Elements 9 (getting ready to upgrade to 11) and this has always been a question of mine. Does this work the same way in iPhoto '09? I have PSE set up as my external editor.  How would you save and access various edits of the same image?
