Its not gobbledygook at all.  I simply don't care about the quantity of light hitting the sensor.  Nor do I care about the density of light hitting the sensor.  I also don't care about minimizing depth of field.  Usually I am trying to maximize it.  So when people like me make a post about focal length or whatever, we don't care about equivalence or physics.  We care about the images produced.

I would also argue that this need to quantify or measure everything also has its drawbacks.  I saw it with attorneys who I used to work with, who somehow believed that any concept could be reduced to a word equation.  On the opposite end, there are a lot of people who believe that photography can similarly be quantified.  This is not to say that certain portions of photography cannot benefit from it, or have some use from it, but ultimately the images produced are not a function of math pr physics, but rather of the photographer's vision or composition.

When it comes to images - the point of photography - compositional talent > light intensity.
