Thom Hogan review of NEX-7

As the OP, what I'd like first and foremost is a quality mid-range zoom in an E-Mount. There is a high performance standard zoom G lens on the roadmap - that's what I'd like most of all.  I know it won't be cheap, and not as small as the 16-50PZ, perhaps not even the 18-55 kit.  My reading of the roadmap suggests that this was scheduled for late 2012, hence my impatience.

Yes, I know there are heaps of lenses that you can mount now.  I've got some of them. But I do like auto-focus and aperture control in many situations - manual focus and stop-down isn't for all the time.  There's a time for primes and and for manual focus lenses, but a quality zoom is certainly more convenient and flexible in many situations.  I can't accept that bolting on an LA-EA2 plus dSLR glass is the answer given the increase in size.  Shelling out for for Leica glass isn't a answer for most people either.

Thom Hogan's point was not that there aren't lenses, but there aren't many high quality native E-Mount lenses.  There's the Zeiss 24 and perhaps also the Sony 50mm.  The Sigma 30mm gets close.  But that's it really.  Many of the rest are quite good for what they are and for the price, but they're not top quality.  I'm a little sceptical about the 10-18 until I see a review - esp on the NEX-7.

I'm not proposing to sell the NEX-7.  Like Thom Hogan I really like the body and the idea of NEX.  The point of my initial post was simply to say that his review really struck a chord with me.  Even though we've had this discussion before and will no doubt have it again, seeing someone of Thom's stature and authority is good.  Might up the pressure on Sony a little.
