Own a 18-70 3.5-4.5 DX any value in upgrade to 17-55 2.8 DX

I own one and I love it. Upgraded from the 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6 kit and don't miss the long end I gave up. I prefer the faster and constant 2.8 aperture over the variable, perhaps you will, too. The build is sturdy and pro. Fast AF, pretty nice bokeh. It is a bit heavier. I'd buy it again.
