Can I spend $1300 to $2000 to get a camera in the class that 30D was once in?

Do I need to spend $3500 to buy the 5DMark3 to be in the class? I am not a cash cow for Canon. Nikon's D600 is a good fit for this class. Feature wise, can 6D compete with D600.
