Stephen,

Thanks so much for the information. I have the SX40...and a new SX50. I'm still on the fence with pros and cons between the two and need something to tip the scale.

Are you using the Fine or Superfine setting and have you compared the two. The superfine setting produces a larger file size, but I still don't see much, if any, improvement over the SX40's Fine. Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Alan

I am using SuperFine in those modes that allow it (it is not available in Sports Mode or in-camera HDR for instance). I see little difference, but I have done some direct tests that show slightly higher detail in SF. On the other hand, even the F on the SX50HS produces larger files than F on the SX40HS.

Thanks, again, Stephen.  Unfortunately, I'm still undecided, even though I got a super deal on the SX50.  Keeping the SX50 means getting new fillter adapters (slightly larger) from Lensmateonline, dealing with a lens hood that doesn't really fit properly and not being able to use 52mm lens caps, etc.  I think Canon did us a disservice here listing the same accessories as the SX40, and not (yet) making properly fitting items.

If only there were some really WOW factor that caused the SX50 to stand out over the SX40...
