d50 kit lens (AF-S Nikkor 18-55 ED) zoom ring stuck - repair or buy a new (better) base lens?
Nov 24, 2012

Dear Forum,

Lens: AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 18-55 mm f/3.5-5.6G ED II

Zoom ring is stuck. Had about 5 minutes of stiffness, then stuck. No prior warning signs. No trauma to lens/camera.

Repair estimate through Nikon website repair utility - $165

Should I fix or buy a new (better) lens? If new, recs on a comparable unit? Or, should I just invest in a new kit altogether and upgrade the body at the same time? My wife, however, may not buy into the new kit option.

My background: novice photographer, limited knowledge of bells/whistles, quality photos obtained by enormous volume of picture taking/luck. My other lens is an AF Nikkor 300mm 1:4 (was inherited. hence, i am a Nikon user). Hand shake/tremor is the bane of my photography existence with the telephoto.

I would be grateful for any comments/recommendations.

Thanks,

Lou
