It is also possible to avoid the HDR effect and get the tones you want by selectively burning in and dodging - a technique that has been used by generations of B&W darkroom workers, using high DR film.

This.  Or multiple passes through a raw processor, and layer masks.  We can all spot the ugly HDR photos, but "every time this is attempted" shows extreme observation bias.  When you don't notice any PP, it could very well mean it was done skillfully (successfully).

Your complaint seems to be that, in the hands of an unskilled worker, the high DR sensor cameras produce ugly results. Perhaps the high DR sensors should be reserved only for competent photographers, who have some post processing skills?

Karl might as well argue against DOF control, or AF, or automatic exposure.  All of them can be inappropriately relied upon by the inexperienced photographer.  Arguing Canon is a better approach than Sony because their worse-performing sensors prevent people from turning out cr@p photos is, well, cr@p.  A Sony sensor in my hands would improve my current results freeing them of pattern noise at large print sizes, not suddenly turn me into a hackey HDRist.
