As to the tripod thing . I don't like them either . But in t his case I had no option. I was also shooing with a whole bunch of guys that have stuff that can shoot black cats in cola mines so I had to use every aid at my disposal. Strangely so did they. I used a heavy duty model as I recon if you are going to use a tripod use a sturdy one.  I also used a heavy duty ball head.

Now a mono pod that is a useless bit of kit,  it sort of works sometimes  , but I land up tripping myself and other people etc. I have 3 mono pods so go figure.
