The telephoto range is probably where you have the least IQ differences between primes and zooms. So you should go with the lens that gives you what you want in return for the price you can pay.

Regarding price. Don't ever believe that the asked price for any item is proportional to the actual cost of the used components. The price is much more dependent on the production numbers of the item. Long telephoto primes are so expensive because very few people buy them. The zoom lenses are sold more often and can thus be sold cheeper. I very much doubt, however, whether the material value in the primes is higher.
