Please help with question about D7000 batter grip

I bought a generic batter grip off Amazon.  I do like shooting portrait shots with it.  I set my D7000 to use the batteris in the grip first.  However.  It seems like it's just using the batter in the camera and not using my AA's in the grip at all.  I set batter type in grip to AA's also.  Am I forgetting to do something?
