I shoot a little using manual focus but that's not really an option when you carrying a 3 year old whilst trying to take a pic of a 6 year old chasing you. So I need good AF.I also quite like a bit of context (room / background) in my photos and am often interacting with the kids whilst shooting, so I like wider lenses. This is where I am finding trouble with the NEX system as they are awesome in good light but since I can't really afford the 24mm Zeiss I'm basically out of options. I generally shoot candid snaps of my family (kids) and friends and it's often indoors in lowish light and they're often in motion (read as - I want fast lenses).

The camera isn't your problem .You want to be a photographer, but you mostly do family shots ?
If you want to make family shots look good, you might want to study the masters .Or just get a decent P&S, or a DSLR if you need the tech advantage .
Large-ish sensor mirrorless isn't made for snapshots, and for snapshots anything will do, once you get used to it .

Keep NEX for portraits of the kids, family pictures and "serious photography".

then, in ADDITION to the NEX, for snapshots, an enthusiast compact with very fast lens might be way to go, since the smaller sensor cameras have far more forgiving AF because of their deeper DOF. Choose one with fast AF (fast glass like the newest Lumix LX7 maybe or the next Oly XZ?

But not a compact like the RX100 because it's sensor may be larger than the one in your NEX, and that would threaten your view of the order of things? (With the NEX at the top of the pyramid?)

Whoah scooter. hoppag already owns a NEX. So since we were talking second cameras, didnt really think of the RX100, a $650 camera that I happen to actually like. In fact, right after I bought my NEX 7, Sony announced the RX100 and I actually recommended it to my brother who ended up taking my advice.

Got no idea what you're talking about with my "view of the order of things" and your fantasy where somebody thinks that RX100 1" sensors are larger than NEX APS-C sensors.

every time you sell equipment you take a monetary loss. I was just suggesting something that involved keeping what he has.
