New to Studio Lighting, need help!

I am very new to studio work, although not to photography.  My question is what type of studio lighting would be good for a beginner.  I have been leaning towards continuous lighting kits, as portability and cost is also a concern.  Should I be looking with or without soft boxes, umbrellas or strobes, as an alternative.  Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks in advance.
