Fungus on Nikon 180mm 2.8 AF?
Nov 22, 2012

Hi,

Sorry if this is a very frequently asked question. I've just received a used 180mm lens I bought on ebay (yes, I know it's my own fault), and there are some blemishes on the perimeter of the glass (underneath the front element). It also seems like there are cleaning marks within the lens.

Could this be fungus, or are these blemishes normal (e.g., ageing coating, dust or cleaning residue)?

The seller did point out that this lens was in need of a clean, so if this is nothing to worry about, I'm happy to keep the lens. And the images look fantastic. But if it's likely to be fungus, I will try to return it.

Below is an image of the blemish. It looks worse in the photo actually - it is only strongly noticeable at a certain angle.

Thanks for any advice!

Seb
