The camera isn't your problem .You want to be a photographer, but you mostly do family shots ?
If you want to make family shots look good, you might want to study the masters .Or just get a decent P&S, or a DSLR if you need the tech advantage .
Large-ish sensor mirrorless isn't made for snapshots, and for snapshots anything will do, once you get used to it .

Keep NEX for portraits of the kids, family pictures and "serious photography".

then, in ADDITION to the NEX, for snapshots, an enthusiast compact with very fast lens might be way to go, since the smaller sensor cameras have far more forgiving AF because of their deeper DOF. Choose one with fast AF (fast glass like the newest Lumix LX7 maybe or the next Oly XZ?
