D600 and NIKKOR 70-300 F/4.5-5.5 G VR IF-ED

I have it and have no issues with it, given limits on design.  It is sharp from 70-200mm in decent light.  Not sure what type of "short zoom" you are looking for.  I also own a 80-200mm f2.8, i would keep both as the 70-300 is much lighter and still has great utility, your needs may be different.
