HELP needed to move windows 7 to a new hard drive using Backup and Restore (PLEASE)

Thanks for the detailed answer. The laptop has a 3rd usb/sata port and luckily it is usb 2 port and I could access the image on my external drive. However as soon as I initiated the restore process I got another window saying "The system image restore failed. No disk that can be used for recovering system disk can be found". Does it mean the new hard drive is not working right? (I purchased this (Seagate Momentus XT ST95005620AS) drive from Newegg). or is it referring to the usb drive? When I pressed the detail option in that window it says that I should boot in windows recovery environment (?) and then connect the usb drive.  It is getting complicated now.
