Stick with Nex or Head Back to Micro Four Thirds

Because maybe you won't have those with you when you're at Gymboree.

The cheap lenses on DSLR's don't always have the fast autofocus.  From what I've seen, mirrorless kits are about as fast as DSLR kits on wide-angle zooms (which is what you'll use to shoot kids.)

Do you keep the camera in the crib or diaper bag?    I think the NEX is a lot easier to hold one-handed than an SLR and you don't have to hold it to your eye to take a quick shot of a kid.  Many of the m43 cameras have decent grips too.  The DSLR grip is not much of an asset until you get to the larger telephoto lenses.

Again, the inexpensive DSLR kits don't always focus all that fast.  The advantage of the DSLR is if you're willing to invest the big bucks, you can get unmatched AF performance.  This is especially true with very bright lenses at very long focal lengths where sports and wildlife happen.  The kits people are discussing here are with mid-to-wide zooms where I don't think DSLR's really have much, if any, advantage.
