Shallow DOF is popular precisely because not all cameras can do it well

One reason you see more shallow DOF shots these days is that not everyone can do it.  It's a shorthand for telling the world (or potential clients) you have something more than just a point and shoot or basic camera with kit lens that anyone can buy for a few hundred dollars.  Right now, more expensive cameras are better at a few things:

  • Making really big prints
  • Shooting shallow DOF
  • Tracking autofocus

Of these, only shallow DOF is obvious for web sized images.  (It used to be that high FPS was a also discriminator, but no longer.)
