That Steve Huff review is spot on. After using the camera for 5 full days, I agree with everything he said.

Hey - I loved your AF demonstration in the dark.

How is AF with decent lighting and average subjects (not a blank white wall with no texture!)?

Could you compare the RX1 AF performance - impressions at least - with other compact cameras such as NEX or X100 or X-Pro or an Oly m4/3 or what have you?

Especially the part about the EVF. I really don't mind the bulk or could care less about paying more for the external EVF. It just bugs me that I can't just throw it in my bag without the fear of damaging it. It doesn't have a 'lock' button so it can be easily lost too. (In fact, someone reported losing there OVF and thumbgrip already)

Interesting - my GXR EVF slides on and off to the hotshoe but I can't imagine it ever coming off unintentionally.  It has a tab which slides in under the hotshoe as well, presumably for more friction grip.

AND I wouldn't want to snap it on/off everytime because it will probably weaken the connections and make it a loose fit.

I do take mine off and on all the time. No problems yet after a year of doing so.  I carry the GXR with me all the time, in a small $13 shoulder bag (not a camera bag). It's easy to reach in, pull out the camera and shoot in a hurry using the LCD for composition; if I have time or will be keeping the camera out and in hand, then I put the EVF on.

Two years ago I'd have never had thought I'd use a rear LCD for composition, but there are times when it's actually my preference now, especially for "street" shooting or any sort of candid work where you want subjects to ignore you. They see a small camera being held like a cell phone or point and shoot and subjects tend to forget all about you.  But put a camera to your eye and... suddenly everyone is aware you are there.

Anyway the RX1 is what it is. I'm getting the EVF too, and what I'd like to do to make it more user friendly is to change bags, not camera or shooting style. I need to find a bag that can take the RX1 with EVF mounted, camera vertically on its side with the grip up, lens facing forward. Also needs to have a different compartment for a cell phone, maybe wallet and keys too. And remain very small.

Somewhere out there is the perfect bag. It probably isn't a camera bag and probably won't cost an arm and a leg.

If the EVF was built-in (even if that meant making it a bit taller and more expensive) this camera would have been PERFECT.

Yup, I'd have gone with a little larger too, that'd be an easy trade off to accept for the more streamlined shape (compared to external EVF).

On the other hand I do use the tilt feature of external EVFs and I'm not 100% sure I'd want to give that up now in exchange for a streamlined shape.
