I agree with everything you have written here. You guys have it lucky though, you have the latest and greatest! I hang out in the Olympus Four Thirds forum, because I really enjoy my Olympus E-5 and the Zuiko Digital lenses.
Not a day goes by that we are not attacked by people who so rabidly believe that, for example, full frame digital is the be-all-end-all of photography, who take time out of their day to specifically troll that forum and seed doubt in every thread they can find.
I wish I could just say "hey, you have the better sensors, at least admit that we have the better lenses" but whether that sentence is followed by a smiley or not, it would start some sort of empty, baseless posting war that recycle the same tired logic until a thread if filled to exhaustion.
I almost feel like naming names, but let's leave it at that. You are not alone in your balanced oversight, and the depressing feeling caused by the absolute mediocrity regularly displayed here. The incessant need by certain people to keep on shooting down all other people's threads by referring the some or other brand's equipment that they use, and how nothing else could compete.
I have come to believe that this is not a place to amicably share photos and thoughts. How I wish these forums could be more like http://www.apug.org (I shoot primarily film still) or http://www.openphotographyforums.com (unfortunately not all that active these days).
I wish you luck in finding forums with more stimulating discussion - they are out there, if you have a look. DPReview is kind of the continuous flame war of photo forums, a very hostile and sterile place at times.
The forum is only as good a place as the majority of people make it. Unfortunately, with no real democratic "say", the only power the non-trolling user has is that of ignoring the troll posts, which is not enough to get rid of them.
As a rather appreciative user of a 1959 Nikon F and a couple of great manual focus Nikkors, I have a connection to the Nikon full-frame (albeit analog) camp - greetings to you all!
