I have both NEX + m43, but leaning toward NEX

No, you're not an idiot.  It is healthier to explore both systems - own both platforms - then becoming a nex/m43 fanboyz with blind-hatred.  Owning both system paints a very different pictures and enable you to speak from personal experience rather than blind hate.

More importantly, both m43 and NEX has its flaws & benefits, as such, I find it hard to part with either system.  My Panasonic GF2 enjoy vastly superior AF (nearly instant) over my NEX C3 that AF struggle quite often.  But its resulting image (noisy iso800-160, blown highlight, over-sharpen) cannot even comes close to the buttery-smooth image from my NEX C3.  There is no noise, smooth-not-over-sharpen, and dynamic range is incredible.  I no longer worry about blown highlights.  I also love how much easier it is to induced background blur with NEX.

I was using an E-PL1 and Panny 14mm F2.5 before and loved this combination, colour and sharpness were really pleasing to my eye.

E-PL1 is one of the SHARPEST JPEG camera in the world. It has a very low-AA filter resulting in a very SHARP images.  For landscaping, this a very good setup, as Olympus color tend to be very VIVID.
.  Portait photographer like me prefer muted-color with softer-not-over-sharpen images, and low contrast to increase skin-tones.  Where as landscape sharpness love E-PL1.  Its a matter of tasteDifferent People, Different Strokes.  Personally, I find most m43 camera, particularly E-PL1 over-sharpen to the point that you see jpeg artifacts.  The famous Olympus color is also overly exaggerated, resulting in cartoonish skin-tones with orangy faces.  What I'm trying to say is E-PL1 is NOT PLEASING TO MY EYESHowever,
e-PL1 lacks AF-illuminator, and is agonizingly SLOW.  Low light shooting is a pain with E-PL1.  You should have kept E-P3.  Its actually my favorite m43 camera with instant AF

A few of months back I decided that I wanted better AF and better low light performance, so looked into upgrading to the E-P3 (since I liked my E-PL1 so much)

I generally shoot candid snaps of my family (kids) and friends and it's often indoors in lowish light and they're often in motion (read as - I want fast lenses). I also quite like a bit of context (room / background) in my photos and am often interacting with the kids whilst shooting, so I like wider lenses. This is where I am finding trouble with the NEX system as they are awesome in good light but since I can't really afford the 24mm Zeiss I'm basically out of options.

Sadly, no NEX camera can focus as fast as any Panasonic m43 or latest Olympus em5, ep3, epl3, e-pm1.  These camera focus in an instant, and is better for shooting kits.  Honestly Oly E-P3 + Panny 14mm is one of the Fastest Mirrorless Setup - you should have kept it

So, the options I have come up with are:
- Get a used SEL50F1.8 and try to take a few steps back/away from subject- Use the flash more (I have the HVL-F20 and use bounce, which is great, but I prefer to shoot in natural light where possible)- Wait to see what new lenses comes out next year, tempted by the SEL35F18 and I hear a new pancake is coming (I assume the new Zeiss lenses will also be too pricy)- Go back to an Olly and get an E-P3 or E-PL5 (which has the same sensor as the OMD).
  • 50mm is too long - you get People's upper body with very little surrounding contest.  This is the wrong lens for you
  • Keep in mind that Your HOUSE is not that BIG - you're back will be against the WALL yet still can't get squeeze enough of the surrounding
  • Flash is not an option unless you won a newer NEX-7 or NEX-6 with hot-shoes.  Otherwise you need to order a NEX-flash-adapter from China with dubious success rate.  Some report they never get it to work
  • 35mm f/1.8 OSS is worth the wait.  However, NEX camea body simply do not focus as fast as m43 camera right now.  You may have a fast aperture lens, but if camera struggle to AF, then you might be better off with m43

Ultimately, photography & gear is a personal journey that is different from people to people.  I'm a people/portrait shooter and find NEX deliver far-better-out-of-camera images without editing.  Its only weakness is AF speed is pokey for shooting kids.  However, its is easy to compensate by using ultra-Fast-Continuous Shooting.  I'm actually thinking off getting rid of my m43 and concentrate on NEX.

To each its own, Good Luck.
