D7000 meets Nikon 17-55 2.8

Very fine. It seems to be a nice combo. The pictures are crystal clear, and you are playing nicely with that shallow depth of field. Yes, 2.8 gives you a lot of room, and generally better pictures with details in the shadow preserved.
