To get better subject isolation with APS-C, I find it helps to frame the subject as tightly as possible. Sometimes I back off too much and I have to crop - then for all practical purposes I'm shooting an even smaller format and the BOKEH suffers accordingly.

With smaller subjects at close distances, I find there is blur to spare - even with shorter lenses.
