G1X for two weeks in Italy
Nov 20, 2012

My husband and I recently returned from a couple of weeks in Italy, as I have to have my "Italy Fix" at fairly regular intervals ! I used the G1X almost exclusively on this trip, just as I did in Paris this past May. As some of you know, since 1979, I've always traveled with am SLR or dSLR, but for the past year or so, traveling with a smaller camera was necessitated by basal joint replacement in both wrists.

I have to admit that I am more than convinced that the G1X is the ideal travel camera for me (at least for now), and that I got just as many keepers with it as with my 7D or xxD cameras on trips for the past 10 years. The focal length and low light capabilities more than met my needs 99% of the time. I had an SX40 with me for backup for the very few times I felt I wanted longer reach. After many trips to Italy, IMHO Italy generally needs wider more than longer .

For those who are bothered by the lag time, or need for faster AF, neither of these were a problem. The only problem I had in Italy this trip, was rain ! Venice was glorious, but rain constrained my outdoor grab shots to some extent in both Florence and Rome. It also kept us from doing some runouts we had planned, but hey... there's always "next time"

So below are three galleries that might interest some of you. I have put my comments below each image for those interested enough to read more. As an art historian and former instructor in Art History, I can't help myself ihere, as "once a teacher, always a teacher " ! Ignore or read as you like !

For those who notice some outdoor shots made at ISO 1600... well that is because of my carelessness in not resetting the ISO from previous low light shots ! Sorry guys, but I'm kind of a "set it and forget it" photographer !

I've mentioned this before, but FWIW, almost all museums in Italy now prohibit photography. This is extending to many churches as well, so my usual interest in "people observing art" in museums doesn't work in Italy, except in one or two museums such as the Opera del Duomo in Florence.

Cheers !.... all comments are welcome, including typo notifications
