I have Canon 100mm L IS and previously had the non-L version. I also have Sigma 180mm (non-OS) and have also used Tamron 90 and Sigma 150mm (non-OS). IQ wise there is not a great deal of difference among them though Canon 100 L is a bit more contrasty than the older version. Whether you need IS (which adds weight and price) would depend on the style of your macro work. If you are going to use a tripod &/or flash, IS is not of much benefit. IS may actually take extra time to get the focus right which could be critical for moving insects. At macro range IS gives you benefit of 1 or 2 stops at the most, not the 4 stops as when the lens is focused at infinity.
