Metz 24 AF-1 for NEX-7 will it work with Legacy Glass?

What information does a Flash require from the lens for it to work properly, can I use a flash on my NEX-7 with old manual lenses? What problems will I encounter?
I have never used flash, mainly because I hate the built in ones and have never bought an external one.
The reason for asking is I want to try some action shots and I will prefer to use my manual lenses and pre-focus but I'm not sure if this will work. I will be quite close so I don't think I need a more powerful one than the Metz 24.
What do you think? Am I being a complete plumb?
