You bring a an excellent point.  I received nothing from Nikon but form letters.  Essentially they told me the damage cannot be repaired.  Note that they received the camera on October 19.  On that day they sent a form letter saying they would not proceed without a $253.86 prepayment.  I thought it a rip off but did give them a credit card.

On Oct25 I phoned and was told it would be shipped in 10 days.

On Oct 27 I phoned and the person on the phone acknowledged that my payment had be processed.

Nov 12 a woman on the phone told me she would check and call me back.  I'm still waiting.

On Nov 15 Iphoned and was advised that the camera can not be fixed.

At no time did I get the opportunity to speak with someone who could actually relate to the camera and explain what had happened.
