i have the standard lens kit. i was looking for another good lens to buy possibly 35mm? which is the best lens to get for the canon 650d and will it automatically autofocus? if it doesn't, is it easy to configure myself...(newbie)

I have owned both Canon 35mm lenses (the moderately inexpensive 35mm f/2.0 and the very expensive 35mm F/1.4,) and find them to be good for multi-person family shots in low light, but the viewing angle is a bit too wide for single-person shots of adults- it tends to make noses look really big. The slight perspective distortion works really well when shoot kids, though, because if you shoot down slightly, it really makes their eyes look big and beautiful. For the money, however, I'd go with either the 50mm f/1.8 or the 40mm f/2.8 lenses- they are better optically than the more expensive 35mm f/2 lens, and the tiny 40mm lens makes for a very compact and light package to carry around. Another great alternative to the kit lens is the 17-55 f/2.8 zoom, although it's expensive and much heavier.

what's the lens situation with this canon? can i buy second hands one from ebay? i've heard more are compatible with this...

Canon lenses tend to sell on ebay very close to or even more than you can buy them for new. I have had good luck with refurbished lenses directly from Canon.

if i wanted an external flash, which flash would you recommend?

I recommend the Yongnuo YN-565 EX flash. Although Yongnuo has had some quality issues in the recent past, they seem to have fixed the issues and the build quality is excellent for the money. My concern is that it might not balance well with your small camera; the Canon 430 EX II is more expensive but noticeably lighter and more compact. If you are going to use an on camera flash, though, I highlyrecommend that you read this article: http://neilvn.com/tangents/flash-photography-techniques/4-bouncing-flash/
