I think the Billingham design choices are mostly based on (perceptions of) durability. A simple, open construction has fewer bits to come undone or fall apart. The thin nylon pockets, dividers and organiser slots in the Retro 5 look likely to be the first things to tear, come unstitched etc...

That said, in over thirty years of camera bag ownership, I've yet to wear one out.

Incidently, I have the Billingham f2.8 which has a different front pocket arrangement to the Hadley Pro. I think it's a bit more secure bit it still lacks the TT organiser system you've found useful. No carry handle either.
