My D200 has a rule of thirds grid in the viewfinder that I can turn on and off.

I'd bet money that it hasn't. The grid splits the view into 16 segments, "rule of thirds" would be 9 segments.

Actually the D5000 has such a grid, nine segments. It was omitted in the D5100 (miss it )

2. Unlike the D5100 does the D3200 have an automatic LCD switch off when using the viewfinder?

Nope, but you can turn it off = no real need for the eye sensor.
