nikon 24-120mm or 24-85mm?

Its relatively early days with the 24-85mm VR but the opinion I'm seeing so far is that over the same range there both very similar in terms of sharpness. The 24-120mm looks slightly sharper at the boarders/corner while the 24-85mm is slightly sharper in the center. Beyond 85mm the 24-120mm seems to clearly drop off in sharpness.

The 24-120mm seems better built(although both are mostly plastic) and is fully sealed where as the 24-85mm is only sealed at the mount.

Personally my opinion is that the 24-85mm looks like better value, the range is less useful but all the range offers pretty good quality while the 24-120mm drops off in performance. For some lenses like my 16-35mm VR I can take a dropoff in performance towards the long end as the wide end is really the selling point. With the 24-120mm though having such a long range seems like the main selling point so if part of it isnt great quality thats obviously damaged.
