Sure, changing the mirror angle affects AF. As you and I have pointed out before, the D7000 AF system has a tendency to be distracted by fine detail visible to the periphery of the active AF sensor.

Yes, the difreces in contrast in the FOV of the primary array can affect what is locked on to.

As you and I have also pointed out before, the little black boxes in the viewfinder are substantially smaller than the area the AF sensors see. That combination of things creates what, superficially, looks like back-focusing. In fact, the system is focusing perfectly accurately, just on something different from what the user intended. Obviously, if the little black boxes are mis-aligned relative to the scene elements the AF sensors see, the "back-focusing" will be worse.

I understand...yes, the FOV the AF array sees is what's important.

The little black boxes are drawn on the viewfinder screen. If you push the front of the mirror upwards, scene elements are projected further back on the viewfinder screen, if you push the mirror downwards scene elements are projected further forward. If you go back to the original demonstration of the adjustment procedure that is exactly - and only - what is shown.

The two cam (eccentric pin) adjustments using a hex wrench are there to adjust the angle of the main and sub mirrors only. The adjustment in question only changes the angle of the AF Sub mirror and not the main mirror.  The scene to view finder box relationship is not affected. The FOV of the array to the view finder box is also not affected....just the angle the light hits the AF arrays and that is what affects front/back focus....as I understand it

Adjusting the mirror angle re-aligns the little back boxes and the AF sensors and if that was the problem the "back-focusing" gets better. But that does not change the accuracy of the AF, and if folk think it has, IMV their observations are wrong.

No, the hex screw adjustment affects the AF-Sub mirror only...and that is one of the things that actually does affect accuracy regards front and back focus.  You have to shim the focus screen to get the arrays to line up better....I think
