I've spent a considerable amount of time debating modes and such as to how they contribute from a technique point of view. I have basically narrowed it down to this.

Aperture priority: I use this whenever I have low light or when I know that my subject is stationary, such as with macro. I also use this if I am using a lens that has certain apertures that are too soft for use.

Shutter priority: If I am using a lens with good sharpness across the board and I MUST have a certain shutter speed for things such as action, this is in use. The pickier I get the less I use this as aperture control tends to be more important for sharpness.

TAV: The problem with TAV is it has no protection from over overexposure in the same way other modes do. If I am shooting TAV with the lowest ISO possible (80), I have nowhere to go if I hit a bright patch in the scene. The solution is to set my ISO high for the average of the scene, but I don't use iso1000 if I don't have to. If I am shooting in very low light, this may be useful, but then again in low light I will likely just jump into A mode, open the lens up wider, and crank up the iso to whatever I will find acceptable.

TAV is useful in certain situations, and it is nice to have for these, but I rarely use it. Perhaps it is because I tend to know what iso I want to use for a given scene ect.
